East River Partners: Transforming Old Buildings into New Ones

Downtown Magazine NY - Jody Kriss

The task that actually put East River Partners on the map is the development of 3 luxury apartments on top of the historical Anshei Meseritz Synagogue in the East Village of Manhattan. This couldn't have actually been done without the approval of the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission, and the board approved the task all. The synagogue was founded by Polish immigrants in 1910. Not everyone in th e neighborhood was thrilled with the idea of this landmark being become high-end real estate. But when ERP purchased the home, the synagogue was absolutely nothing more than a landmark. It was on the verge of demolition in 2012, inning accordance with The New York Daily News. It was shuttered and not operating.

Back when we started the construction, people would curse me out," Kriss stated. But when they found out that we were preserving the synagogue, and not demolishing it, they wanted to shake my hand, instead.

East River Partners, LLC assisted in saving this holy place by paying $1.2 million for a 99-year lease on the area upstairs that it's utilizing for the homes, according to The Real Deal. The synagogue was able to begin operating once again on a smaller sized scale in early 2015. So many homes and buildings in densely-populated New York City are crushed together, and the residential or commerc ial property that this synagogue inhabits is only 22 feet broad. But a great deal of living and hoping goes on in the narrow area in between these walls.

"Not only is this a unique and exciting project, its particularly special to develop in a neighborhood that currently does not offer new residences with this level of detail," Jody Kriss told Resident.com. "From incorporating the original stained glass windows to installing high-end appliances, we wanted to integrate the authentic feel of the neighborhood with modern living. We feel weve merged them seamlessly. Check out more info about Jody Kriss from his profiles:
